Goodbye Galapagos By Jerry J. Davis

Darwin sat wearily on the back deck of the steamer, gazing out at the islands and bidding them farewell.A large lizard swam behind the boat, calling to him. “Darwin! Darwin, please… Don’t leave me!”

“I’m sorry,” he said to the lizard. “It would have never worked.”

“I’ll change for you,” the lizard called out. “I swear I will!”

He shook his head, knowing she could never change. Her children perhaps, but not her.

Baby Snapping Turtle

I nearly stepped on this little guy coming out of my office today. He was wandering down the sidewalk! I took him to a quiet little pond so that he wouldn’t be stepped on or run over.

New Haven VT Cares for their Amphibians

spotted-salamanderA reader sent in this heart-warming story:

Volunteers in New Haven, Vermont spend long hours at night helping newts, frogs, and salamanders cross the road safely, and are even hoping to arrange construction of little underpasses for creatures to safely pass under the roadway.

This is awesome.

People tend to forget that these are living creatures with lives all their own.  Humans construct these roadways across their homes, and kill hundreds of thousands of them as they’re simply trying to get from one side to the other.  It’s wonderful to know some people out there understand this, and actually care enough to volunteer their time to help these creatures avoid dangers that we, ourselves, have put into their environment.

Bravo, New Haven!

Snake Eats Dog

Well, this is one way to deal with a yappy little dog…

snakedog

This 10 foot wild python saw Patty Buntine’s Maltese terrier cross-breed, named Bindi, as food.

As you can tell by the terrier-sized lump in the snake’s tummy.

The dog’s owner is sad but not vindictive.  The snake gets to live, and in fact will be returned to the wild.

Iguana Rosada – The New Pink Iguana

So, this is a newly discovered specie of iguana?  Something that Darwin missed during his adventures on the Galapagos Islands?

Looks to me like a plain old Galapagos iguana with a skin condition.

Go ahead, squeeze the turtle…

I found this God-knows-where being used by someone as their avitar.  I had to steal it and put it up here.

Poor Turtle!

That is all!
